Every year I work with a handful of families and individuals moving into this area from a city, a different province, or elsewhere in Saskatchewan. The move is usually driven by work, family, a desire for more space, or simply wanting a slower pace of life. Whatever brings you here, there are some practical things worth knowing before and right after you land.
Getting to Know the Towns
This region isn’t one single community — it’s a network of towns, each with its own character. Spiritwood is the hub, with a solid range of services. Shellbrook and Big River each have their own schools, businesses, and identity. Glaslyn, Debden, Canwood, Medstead, Leoville, and Blaine Lake are smaller but each has a real community around it, from a local rink to a co-op to a school. Spending a bit of time in a few of these towns before committing to one helps you find the fit that’s actually right for your family, not just the first place you looked at.
Schools and Childcare
If you have kids, schools are usually the first practical question. Spiritwood, Shellbrook, Big River, and several of the smaller towns each have their own school, and class sizes tend to be smaller than in a city, which many families see as a real advantage. Childcare options vary more by town, so if you need daycare, ask specifically about availability in whichever community you’re considering rather than assuming it’s the same everywhere.
Health Care and Everyday Services
Spiritwood has a hospital and clinic; several surrounding towns have clinics or visiting services on set days. Grocery stores, a co-op, hardware, and basic services are available in the larger towns, while smaller communities often rely on a shorter drive into Spiritwood or Shellbrook for anything beyond the essentials. It’s worth mapping out, in advance, roughly how far you’ll be driving for groceries, a dentist, or a bigger box store — it’s usually less than people expect coming from a city, but it’s not zero.
Commuting and Highway Access
Highway 3 runs through the heart of this region and connects most of the towns to each other and out toward Prince Albert. Highway 55 and Highway 24 branch off toward other communities and the lake areas. If your job means commuting, figure out your actual drive time from a few different towns before choosing where to buy — a 20-minute difference in commute can matter a lot over a winter.
Winter Is Real, and So Is the Community Around It
If you’re coming from somewhere with milder winters, be honest with yourself about what a Saskatchewan winter involves: a block heater, winter tires, and a plan for what happens if the power goes out or the road gets rough. The upside is that rural communities here are genuinely good at looking out for each other in winter — neighbours plow each other’s driveways, and small-town networks tend to notice quickly if something’s wrong. It’s one of the real, non-obvious benefits of small-town life.
Finding Your People
Community here shows up through the rink, the school, the church, the ag society, the local fair, and just showing up at the co-op. It takes a season or two to feel embedded, but people are generally welcoming to newcomers who show up and participate. Joining a local group or volunteering early is one of the fastest ways to feel at home.
Making the Move Easier
Relocating is stressful under the best circumstances, and doing it into an area you don’t know yet adds another layer. Having someone local who can give you a straight answer about which town, which street, or which acreage actually fits your situation makes a real difference.
